Original so much better than the remake

I just saw the original (1956), after seeing the remake first years ago. There is no comparison, this one is so much better. I don't think Robert Wagner was miscast at all. I like him in a more sinister role. I also associate him with 'good guy' roles or the pillar-of-society type roles, having grown up in the 80s. I had never seen him in anything like this before. I think Joanne Woodward did a good job. I like that the Dorie role in the original was much expanded to the Dorie part that Sean Young played (as a double) in the remake. There was a lot more backstory to the Dorie/Bud relationship in this, and Bud's general disposition prior to meeting Ellen. I also think Mary Astor was wonderful as Bud's doting but clueless mother in it, and I like that Bud is more middle class than 'wrong side of the tracks' Matt Dillon in the remake. It gives him less of an excuse to be the sociopath that he is. Robert Wagner practically glides through his sneaking around and covering his tracks, he makes it look so effortless. Matt Dillon played the role with much more anger. I also can't get over how good looking Robert Wagner was in this. Wow. The clothes were beautiful as a previous poster mentioned in another thread. The music was a bit much but they tried to weave that song, humming, and music in general, in a lot of the film. I am not familiar with the actress that played Ellen but she was great. Max Von Sydow was more sinister in the remake than the actor that plays Mr. Kingship here, but overall, I think the cast was much better in the original, and much sexier!

Originals are always better than remakes.
Mostly remakes, unless done before 1960, are always crap.

I agree with the previous comments. I think Robert Wagner was great. The role is regarded by some critics as his best acting. The film is beautiful to look at. The clothes, Actors, cars and 1950's color. I have also read the book by Ira Levin. It is more chilling but this version of the film is more faithful to the book than the remake.

Yeah, I seem to remember Sean Young playing both Dorothy and Ellen. Typical. Sean Young can't even act, why give her two roles?

Anyways, if you think that version is bad, wait until you see the Bollywood version.

love this version as well nothing beats a great script with great stars and good direction. Wagner & Woodward are like firecrackes together he's one of my personal favorite leading men of her's other than paul but I can't comment on the Remake because I've Never Seen it
"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

I've seen the Bollywood version named 'Baazigar' - In terms of entertainment value, it's miles ahead of this Black and White Hollywood cr@p. Oh yeah, and the lead Indian actor, Shahrukh Khan can run circles around BOTH Robert Wagner AND Jeffrey Hunter in the 'acting' department!

So then I guess that would make the Humphrey Bogart version of "The Maltese Falcon" was "crap" since it was the THIRD version of the story done on film, right? Sometimes, the remake IS better than the original.

Saw the film in HD on the MGM HD channel. Widescreen transfer is good, looks as close to how it looked in 1956. This film, and Between Heaven and Hell(1956) are young Wagner's best work. Curiously, this film has the look and feel of a 20th Century-Fox flick from the mid-50's, but it's a Crown Productions film from United Artists. Wonder how that happened? Anyway, film is very good, with strong characterizations, until the abrupt and unconvincing finish. Well worth watching.
