Does anyone know the significance of the gold bands around the ankles they all wear?
Is it a religious thing, or was it 'just what they wore'??

i've seen it as part of national costume so i guess its just what they wear. the only other thing i can think of if it has some significance in dance like nails and colours

Ankle bracelets are quite common in south asia (including india) as accessories - no special significance, but dancers often wear them as well when performing routines from religious stories they are acting out. They are quite ubiquitous in Indian stores selling traditional wear or from Indian jewelery retailers.
