Was this the first widescreen movie? If not, then what was?

The history of widescreen films is long and complicated.

The best place to find the details is here: http://widescreenmueseum.com/.

Commercially released widescreen movies go back at least as far as The Bat Whispers and The Big Trail (both 1930) and Fox Movietone Follies of 1929. Despite these and a few others made around the same time, widescreen movies didn't arrive to stay until the 1950s, when the movies had to start competing with television. The Robe (1953) was the first CinemaScope film released, although How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) was the first completed. Cinerama used three cameras and dates from 1952.

There is something wrong with my TV. Whenever I play DVDs of 2.35:1 movies, the TV displays the movie as if it's a 1.85:1 movie, and whenever I play a 1.85:1 movie, the TV displays it in full screen. What do you think could be causing this because I want my TV to display movies in their correct aspect ratio!

The problem is more likely to be with the settings of your dvd player. You need to check the video menu on your dvd, and make sure it is set for the right type of screen (16:9 for widescreen, and 4:3 letterbox for standard screen).
