A Question About Deborah Kerr:

has she ever played a murderess or any other sort of villainess?

reply

She played a woman who had done time in THE CHALK GARDEN.

reply

I watched that one decades ago; I'll have to watch it again. Based on the real-life case of Constance Kent, no less!

reply

She played an adulteress in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY three years before KING AND I. Not exactly a villain, but certainly a departure from the norm.

reply

Yes, her role in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY was not really a villianess, but it was definite case of casting against type for Kerr. The role she played was originally offered to Joan Crawford if that gives you an indication of the kind of role it was. Kerr rarely strayed from type during her career. She pretty much always played the good natured heroine.

reply

If you have not seen "The Innocents" you are in for a treat. She is not a villianess but her preformance is nothing short of amazing!

reply

THE INNOCENTS was excellent.

Cracks me up that Richard Rogers put the kabosh on Maureen O'Hara for the film's Anna, saying "No 'pirate queen' is going to play my Anna!" but apparently had no reservations about Kerr. Maybe he hadn't seen FROM HERE TO ETERNITY?
