What happened to Tuptim?

What happen to her in the end? Did she commit suicide?

In the book she is killed. The film is ambiguous as to her fate but I like to believe she was pardoned after the king dies.

In the motion picture "Anna and the King of Siam" Tuptim, played by Linda Darnell, is burned at the stake. I try to avert my eyes as Ms. Darnell's demise in real life was due to the aftereffects of being in a fire.

That's a nice way to think about it! Or at least that the king would view her obvious misery at the death of her lover as punishment enough. It's not exactly kind, but it's better than a beating or execution.

She grew up to be Anita in "West Side Story."

No doubt she would have been burned for treason, as Guinevere almost was.

reply

Nobody knows - there is a rumour that she later became one of Chulalongkorn's wives.
