sharei think it was a sign of wealth and power for a king to be able to have many wives - it showed he could afford to keep all those women, showed how powerful and important he was. And of course, as you say, hVing many children was a good thing for a king. yhough of course the whole system led to rivalries and jealousies among the wives, who were always scheming to get their own children prefered over those of the other wives,
