Early Kubrick

This movie really doesn't have your standard leading man.
Most of the people in this movie made their careers as great character actors or B actors.
How is this movie so good? One word- Kubrick

I watched this for the first time recently. It was incredible.
I really wasn't expecting much but I was blown away.
I am a fan of Film-Noir. This shot into my top 10 of all time.
I already want to watch it again.

Every shot in this film is just well orchestrated. The above-average acting didn't really bother me.

Watched it this morning on TCM's Noir Alley. Yes, it's an entertaining film but I didn't care for the narration. Apparently Kubrick was very opposed to it but the studio heads insisted on it, fearing the constant backtracking employed would create too much confusion for audiences.
