What is it referring to?

I just rewatched this tonight and I thought the exact same thing. Perhaps its a comparison that the characters were going to make a "killing" on this robbery, but then they almost all end up getting killed in the process.

I guess the Tarantinoesque-avant-la-lettre shooting near the end, killing most of the criminals.

It's a racetrack term. "I made a Killing at the tracks."
