Please explain the circumstances of Poole's wife getting killed.

shareokay, here goes -- THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS
poole was a teller at the bank that got hit -- the inside man -- even though he feigned trying to stop one of the robbers. when the cops bust him via a wiretap on his phone, he holes-up in his apartment. all the neighbors claim the wife stepped-out, and that the pooles are great tenants.
the cops get a pass key for poole's apartment and try to enter while also trying to get him to come out peacefully. poole shoots through the door and wings one of the cops in the hallway. the cops return fire, break the door down and continue firing in the dark -- accidentally killing the wife who was home and NOT out as previously claimed. a dismayed poole calmly tries to comfort her -- and rambles on about her being his only love in life, that he wasn't alive until he met her -- as the cops explain (more than once) that he started the shooting and no one could see (since he had turned out the lights to begin with).
at sentencing, poole sees wagner with his wife. while staring at them, the winged-cop infers once more how it was poole's fault that mrs. poole was killed. poole maintains his taught visual of the wagners as he vows, "someday, wagner, i'm going to settle with you for it... i'm *certainly* going to settle with you for it."
