A Real Yawner

I can see why the executive bigwigs shelved this movie for a few years before letting it out of the box. Its a real yawner, the music is okay and it worked good for background music when I was doing other things.
It was playing on TMC this morning(3/6/07) and I sat throught the first sequence, the circus one.. I am not fond of circus's but this really was more of a mime circus which made it more creepy. The old unrequited love theme. The Bracelot I skipped and tried to enjoy the cartoon sequence but it was overly long and I think if they cut out about 10 minutes it might have been enjoyable but as it was . :::yawns:::
The whole movie has no words but its still like watching a combination of old Gene Kelley movies, since the dance sequences have the same type of movements.. ie.. the one handed kick the feet.. the ballet type spin.. the bounce across the floor on your hands movement. All these appeared in numeous other Kelly movies and I guess it was supposed to be a sequel to American in Paris done a few years earlier.
I used to like Kelley's dances and not Astaire.. but watching them both as they aged, I found Astaire had a lot more class than Kelley. Astaire's movements were more abbreviated as he got older (like in Funny Face) yet there was a smoothness to his dance that made it look fresh.
Kelly never seemed to get out of his rut even the cartoon sequence looks like a re-hash of the Jerry cartoon he had done years earlier.
I suppose if you have nothing else to watch and you like dancing you will enjoy the movie. If you have other things to do just put up the volume and listen to the music it has a nice score.

A yawner? I suppose it depends how long one's attention span is.

Agreed, pschearer.

Dopey thread, this. Somehow a review coming from someone admitting that they didn't even bother to watch the film doesn't exactly have a lot of credibility.

Three cheers for Gene Kelly and this revolutionary, trail-blazing effort. Profit be damned!

reply

Amen. So many posters on IMDB wish to show themselves as "critics" and wind up only looking like.....never mind!

I've never seen this one...and now I WANT to!!!

Putting on a movie about dance in order to hear the score is like putting on a movie musical and watching with the sound turned down.

All that effort the artists put forth, wasted.

I've only seen the first act of this movie tonight, and it's so beautifully amazing I could scream! It's already one of my favorite movies. Everyone's asleep at my place, so I'll have to watch the rest tomorrow. Even if the rest of it stinks, which I doubt, it'll still be a gem.

Just saw a long behind the scenes type special on TCM made by mgm and it looked bad unless you're a real danceaphile, and even then........

For one it is Kelly doing Kelly over and over, which is something he did throughout his career. Even the narrator (George Fenniman) mentions the animated sequences are like his Jerry Mouse set. Secondly, I have a feeling that all the other dancers are not that well known to the general public in this country even at the time. Finally it seemed to me like a dance version of Fantasia. But even that movie had a bit of narration tying the pieces together. I know many people think Kelly was a genius. To me Kelly was more of an acrobat than a dancer, just my opinion folks.

I found the film amazingly beautiful and inovative. It was way ahead of his time but now we can appreciate fully Gene Kelly`s genius.
