Blu-ray and DVD re-release from Olive Films 7/17/12

Olive Films is releasing IOTBS on both DVD ($19.95) and Blu-ray ($29.95) on July 17, 2012.

This will be the film's first Blu-ray release. Apparently there are few extras on either disc.

Olive, which has been releasing classic films from the Paramount library, has reportedly acquired rights to titles owned by Republic Pictures. (IOTBS was an Allied Artists film but is now owned by Republic.) If so, this may mean that many of the Republic-controlled films not yet released on DVD will eventually become available. In fact, Olive is re-issuing High Noon (a United Artists title now also owned by Republic) on DVD and Blu-ray that same day.

This is excellent news. It's going to get released in its original 2.1 "Superscope" aspect ratio, too. In addition, this is apparently a "a new HD transfer, one restored from the original negative" (source: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=8607). Olive's releases typically look great but have no supplemental features, so that will probably be the case with this film as well.

Great news, been waiting a long time for this one to come to blu. Love this film. Watch it every Halloween.

So far everything I've read about this release lacks any mention of supplemental features, or simply states that it will most likely have none. This is bad news as far as I'm concerned, because it decreases the already slim likelihood that we'll get a "special edition" of this movie any time soon. It's especially depressing because a commentary track was apparently completed some time ago, and we know about the different cuts of the movie exist (or existed).

With the passing of Kevin McCarthy in 2010, I had hoped that at least some good would come out of it and this movie would finally get the re-evaluation it deserves. Sadly, it looks like that's not going to happen this time, so I'll just hang onto my old DVD and pass on this.

I for one would love to see a box set with the three best versions of this story--the 1956 original, Philip Kaufman's 1978 "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," and Abel Farrera's 1994 "Body Snatchers." All are great, IMHO, and excellent in unique ways.

I guess this box set should include 2007's "The Invasion," but only so I can throw that disc into the garbage.

I purchased the Olive DVD for only ten bucks at a half-price sale at a local Barnes & Noble bookstore in Central New Jersey.
