Throw in the Towel

Early on, in the fixed fights, the cornermen for Toro's opponents would throw in the towel at the drop of the gloves. In Toro's last fight, his handlers were worried about the beating he was about to take. When Toro was getting his brains beaten in, why didn't someone in Toro's corner do the same?

That was the big championship fight, the financial pay off for Nick's investment. It probably had to last a while and put on a good show, so that the fans would be satisfied. Otherwise the fans might complain and demand their tickets be refunded, or the boxing commission might investigate and that could interfere with Nick and the others getting their money.

Toro's corner was more interested in the health of Toro. Just a glimpse of the punishment Toro was absorbing would satisfy The Boxing Commission. Lots of fights end after one round but don't recall even one fan getting a refund.

Before the fight, Eddie and George tried to convince Toro to protect himself during the fight, and showed him what to do. They were the only ones who cared about Toro's welfare. The others only viewed him as a means of making money.

But Toro insisted, out of pride, on doing his best to win the fight. If someone had thrown in the towel, and Toro was obviously still willing and able to keep fighting, then it probably would have turned out like the first fight with the guy (Sailor Rigazzo?) who didn't want to throw the fight (and got beat up in the shower). That fight almost got investigated by the boxing commission. The championship fight, having much more publicity and money at stake, would certainly have been investigated.

Well Toro did manage to get in one good punch and knock Buddy down who was totally startled as he got up. It was likely put in so the audience would think that maybe Toro had a chance at it.
