Did the producers actually watch this before they released it?

Yes, I know John Wayne and his brother produced it. But could any of you see what was going on during that nighttime gun battle? It was way too dark for me although the outcome was pretty predictable. I would have thought the makers would have lightened up the contrast a bit so we could see the action.
