Unfortunately , I missed the first hour of this film but the last hour of it made a very positive impression on me. What a great little movie this is. Walter Brennan , once again , is fabulous. Brandon De Wilde just great , again...as were the rest of the cast !! It's very sad that Brandon De Wilde died such a young man and so tragically . Think of what could have been in his career , if not cut so short....?

i had no idea brandon de wilde died so young in a car accident until you mentioned it and i looked up more information. even if he never did another thing after shane, his anguished voice yelling for shane to come back was enough to cement him in people's hearts. i did enjoy him tremendously in goodbye, my lady. a great actor.

He was pretty impressive as a young adult, too. You should check him out in Hud, All Fall Down, and as John Wayne's estranged son in In Harm's Way.

I saw this many, many years ago. It was so sad I've never been able to bring myself to watch it again.

it felt like they stretched a 30 min episode of Lassie out to 94 minutes.

a John Wayne Production...

I'm so glad to see this on TCM right now! What a nice surprise. I'm glad it hasn't fallen off their radar. It's super and deserves to be played and seen regularly.

I also saw this movie last night on TCM for the very first time. And I was truly touched by the story and performances. A great little movie indeed!

Saw this when I was a child. I watch this movie every time it airs. It recently played again on TCM following Lassie Come Home, two dog flicks in a row that get me misty eyed every time. It seems to be a little known film compared to Old Yeller but I think it's one that every family with little kids should watch. The cast is excellent and Brandon DeWilde really stands out way he depicts Skeeter as extraordinary wise and mature beyond his age. Phil Harris seems like he is going be a hard man in the beginning and turns out to be a likable blowhard with a kind soul. "Lady" is an amazing dog--I wish there was an article somewhere about how they trained the Basenji in this film--there must be behind the scenes film or written accounts still in existence. Wiki calls it the most ancient dog breed. It has a very unusual look and face, at least to me.

Hi, James, I think Brandon DeWilde was just wonderful too and he had a piece of my heart ever since I saw him in Shane. I learned from another poster here that he sadly died quite young.

I would love to know much more about this movie too because it was filmed in my hometown of Albany, GA. In fact, I didn't know this when I started watching. I thought the landscape, trees, natural details just looked way too familiar, so I looked it up and whoa! I couldn't believe it! I bet there are people around the area who remember this movie being filmed.

I found this excellent account of the film's production written by the lady who arranged the services of Lady.

Thank you for this outstanding article! I was really suprised to find out from it they filmed in August of 1955, which would be the absolute hottest time of year in Georgia. That had to have been tough on the dogs. Basenjis sound like real troopers based on what the article said about Lady.

What a sweet thing that those dogs sat in the premiere in London!
