I caught this today on AMC and it was a perfect Saturday afternoon flick. I'm curious about whether any of you have ever heard the name pronounced mil-ARD Fillmore. I always thought it was MIL-ard Fillmore. His pronunciation took me out of the movie for a sec.

It was on TCM and AMC the same day??? I had been waiting for over a year for this one to come back. It was a favorite when I was a kid and I read the book back then.
Mill-ARD was intended to be either dialectical or to show that those southern folks are an ignorant lot. I've believed for a long time that the city of El Dorado, Arkansas should change the pronunciation of its name only because rhyming it with tornado perpetuates a stereotype of ignorant southerners. I lived for a while in El Dorado County, CA which rhymes with avocado.

If you were interrupted by 45 minutes of commercials ro annoying "factoids" on the bottom of the screen, it was AMC. Otherwise, it was TCM (I know it was just on TCM since I watched it ;-) The character that pronounces it Mil-ARD also spells bacon as b-a-k-i-n-g and tobacco as t-o-b-a-c-c-y. So it just shows that although he's respected, he's certainly not the most educated (although even with his limits, he's probably more educated than Uncle Jesse or the other locals).
shareYeah, I found his pronunciation of the former president's name odd, but what was really distracting was the captions were on--I sort of needed them due to the accents--and the first several times they spelled the name "Mallard" to match the character's pronunciation, then switched to "Millard"!
shareThe actor Millard Mitchell, who played the studio boss in "Singin' in the Rain", pronounced his first name with the emphasis on the second syllable, so it's not necessarily a reflection on the characters' education. I've always heard Fillmore's first name with the first syllable accented, but I don't know which way is correct, for him.
