Oh, no. Bette would have totally done it.

but she would have ruined the balance of the movie. her performances had already veered towards parody by then. just imagine her chewing the scenery and shouting 'Whataya doin makin breakfast in mah kitchen, LESLIE?!'

reply

Yeah, Bette would be hard to rein in -- expecially when she knew she had so little screen time.

No, it couldn't have happened. Mercedes Mc was the best cast player in the film.

reply

Yes, and she was perfect for the role. She had a butch quality, but she didn't overplay it, thank God.

I guess it should be a simple yes or no answer but after considering the question, I find I can't answer it.

I don't really know what purpose Luz played in the movie. Okay, she was a thorn in Leslie's side, her gift to Jett is what launched his rise to success, she caused the horse to be injured then put down, and one of the kids was named for her, but, in my opinion that could have been done much better in other ways.

The actress won an Oscar and there was talk of putting really big name actresses in the role like Davis. I don't get it. It wasn't a very big role and, as I said before, was, I felt, mostly unnecessary in the scheme of things.

Whatever stage she may have been at in her career, I don't understand why someone like Bette Davis would even want that role. I also don't understand why she would be considered for it. When Luz was in the movie Bick was in his younger years. One could have a much older sister but I think Davis would have been too old at that point to believably play the young Bick's sister. She also couldn't pull off being on a horse riding it the way Luz did when she was killed.

(SIGH) I was hoping to find clarity on these boards because I didn't get the movie. So far, I'm more confused than ever. The more I think about it the less sense it makes.
