More about 'War Winds'?

What a beautiful horse!! I'm thinking he is an Arabian. Does anyone out there know anything about him? I cringed when Luz made hamburger out of his flanks with those damn Spurs!

That horse was magnificent, and yes, I believe it was an Arabian.

Thank you so much for your reply! I used to raise Arabians when I was a little younger and I love them so much still.

I always thought she deserved what she got. Poor War Winds didn't get what he deserved at all. I think he may have been an Arabian, but he was supposed to be a thoroughbred.

I never could muster up a lot of sympathy for Luz.

I agree with you lynnrnsd. I have never ridden a horse in my entire life, but I love all animals. Every time I see this movie I become angrier and angrier on what Luz did to that horse with her spurs. Even I know that that is very painful, and especially to a horse! Luz did that on purpose to spite Leslie and at the same time she tried to show who was boss to War Winds. He proved to her that she deserved to be thrown. And no matter how much someone is used to be trampled, thrown, etc.; when you mistreat a animal or a horse, they will still show you who is boss ultimately. I realize that this was a movie and the horse more than likely was not harmed, but just the thought of hurting that animal regardless makes my skin crawl. And War Winds was supposed to be a Stud for the Ranch.

There's a CD floating around out there titled Giant Vol. 2 containing the original score plus other cuts composed for the film that didn't make the final score. Not sure it's still obtainable but the title of the music for War Winds return to Reata is "Lame horse returns home". A search for that should yield info on the CD.

Yes, completely agree...what an absolutely beautiful horse!

This could be wrong, but searching around I found a site with information stating that "War Winds" was played by "Fury", from the television series of that name. Fury was known as "Highland Dale" when he lived on a farm in the town of Joplin, Missouri. He was only 18 months old when he was discovered by Ralph McCutcheon - a renowned trainer of animal motion picture stars. His first movie was "Black Beauty" in 1946. Fury won Patsy Awards, they are given to the animals as Oscars are to people. In 1958 for the movie "Wild is the Wind", he was 2nd place winner. Another in 1955 for "Gypsy Colt" as 1st place, then was 3rd place for the "Fury" series in 1960 & 1961. I heard somewhere that he was an American Saddlebred, which he more closely resembles, as he lacks the "dished" face of an Arabian. The site states Fury died in 1973 at the age of 29.
