Eastmancolor

I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really love the surreal quality it gives the film.

Ironjade, in the "3D" post, wonders if it was filmed that way, due to vases, etc. arranged so that they pop up and out at the viewer. It's an interesting question, certainly, but as I believe the film was made on a modest budget and that perhaps it was the quality of the Eastmancolor itself (and the lighting setups needed) that gave that quality of depth.

I agree with you. For me it's that blue car, the Delahaye 135 Cabriolet Chapron in the opening scene on the Riviera. So rich and vibrant in color. All through the movie the color is what impresses me the most. I don't think movies of today can equal it.

That was a fabulous car. Just curious...when and where did you see the film? I saw it years ago on TCM and hunted down a copy of DVD.

First of all, I just bought it over a year ago on Amazon so I can watch it on my Ipad. So I think it was on Amazon I first saw it if I'm not mistaken. Looking back, the only reason I probably took a chance on it without having seen it prior or knowing anything about it was because Robert Mitchum is in it. Anything he's in I like. Plus when I watched the trailer, it was that beautiful Eastman color. You can buy the blue ray on Amazon too.

Just watched the trailer on youtube. Thanks for the heads-up, as I didn't realize there was one out there. That Eastman color is fabulous. I still think they must have used some sort of special lens or something, to get that 3D effect. I love how it's presented as "Sheldon Reynold's Foreign Intrigue". He produced a tv series of the same name, aka "Dateline Europe" (1951). It's on youtube.

God, I am losing it. I posted the link to the trailer, five years ago!

mckee, I located the estate used in the beginning of the movie on google earth. It's all built up around it and you can't go in the front but just in the back. It's the Palais de Marbre in Nice.

It's beautiful. Thank you. Check out the link to the article I posted. Sort of addresses the 3D-ish effect.
