Is this movie really a classic? Criterion selected this???

I was surprised Criterion selected this as one of the movies it has blessed with its name. It has a measly 6.1 rating on IMDB today (6-6-08). It doesn't seem to have that big a fan base, so why did Criterion select it? Is it really a classic movie? Any ideas?

It is a cult classic and was at the time of its release, very controversial and had many film makers (Such as Godard) defending it and believing it was an important movie. Godard later wrote that over time, the film seemed less intelligent and more of a movie that delivers on face value. It isn't a great movie but one important if you look at its reception and the time it was released.

Its definitely worthy of the criterion label. More then some movies(Like Armageddon, Traffic, etc) which are chosen more to get people in to the criterion brand and what their dvds offer.

Good point. Criterion isn't always a guarantee of classic film which makes me wonder, what exactly are Criterion's criteria for selecting films? On one hand we have the works of Kurosawa & Bergman. Then we have "Jaws". Okey dokeee.

Based on the Criterion label, I was expecting Et Dieu... to be amazing. It's very good, but I'm not sure why it was singled out as the only Bardot/Vadim film to get the Criterion honor. I thought Repos du guerrier was a much more powerful Bardot/Vadim effort. (but imdb rates that a 5.0 so what do I know? )

I would consider it more a movie of 'cultural significance' than a classic. It shows the sexual attitudes of it's time, which was considered very racy by American standards but now seem very tame. I think it's groundbreaking because it gets across that Juliette is extremely sexy WITHOUT really showing a lot of nudity or sex scenes.

Of course it is.

But they should release 'La Verite' instead. It's such a great B.B. film!

Viva Bardot!

I like it more than many of the Criterion films that have more widespread reputations as "classics" . . . 8/10 from me.

Classic is a good way of describing this film. Brigitte Bardot and St Tropez are both classic icons.

I suppose the film is not highly rated because most people prefer more contemporary films. Most people prefer to own contemporary cars rather than classic cars.

Normally I would give it 6/10 (not bad) but it gets another point for Brigitte and St Tropez.
