I'm about halfway through the Bowery Boys offerings so this question might have an obvious answer to some. Is this the first or only time characters die in the series? Those bad guys certainly didn't survive that jeep crash and resulting explosion. It seemed like a rather dark turn for such a light hearted series, especially since the boys didn't even seem to acknowledge the fact that they just killed multiple people. Of course, the bad guys deserved what they got but I was rather surprised they went there.

I was thinking the same thing. I kept waiting for some scene where the villains were rolling around in the dirt, somehow surviving, or had jumped off the vehicle earlier.

I've "only" seen 17 of the Bowery Boys series (and a couple of the East Side Kids films), but this is the only time I remember characters dying in the films. Seemed out of tune to me as well.
