Why'd the guy die (spoiler)?

I must've missed something...was the dad dying throughout the film? Radiation?

IIRC, the old prospector, Pete(?) was going stir-crazy and left and the dad went after him and tried to get him to come back, exposing himself to radiation in the process.

I just watched it the other night on AMC and asked the same thing. One wonders how such a supposedly intelligent man would not turn back when it got too dangerous since he knew the cutoff point, and would also have to take into account staying alive to help with creating a new society instead of catering to a drunk old man.

I always thought that was a cheap plot device. His character was too intelligent to let himself get a lethal dose of radiation. The reason was to only have the two characters survive at the end. A new Adam and Eve. Although there were other survivors in other parts of the world.
