so bad it's ... fun


… just caught Curucu last night on Svengoolie and more or less enjoyed it. I pretty much agree with the mostly negative comments, but for me, the sheer incompetence of the entire production is what makes Curucu so entertaining.
The main recommendation is that it was filmed in its entirety in Brazil. Otherwise my favorite thing about the movie is Vivian’s kitschy dance at the club, and Raoul Kraushaar’s overbearing, pan-South American score.
Also surprising to discover Curucu was directed by the great 40s scriptwriter Curt Siodmak, but alas this isn't his best directorial effort (then again, maybe it is, in an Ed Woodish sort of way). BTW terrific scream by Beverly Garland, the best this side of Fay Wray, but more notable for the sheer terror on her face than the quality of the scream itself.
