Heartbreaking detail (Big Spoiler)

I have seen this movie several times, and just realized something re-watching it today. Fergus the Ostler, or as the jester calls him, Who-gus the Whats-ler, is a noble character. At the start of the joust between Griswold and the jester, Ravenhurst's men whisper to him that Fergus the Ostler has been tortured to death. I never before realized that Fergus dies. How can I enjoy this comedy anymore, knowing that Fergus is being tortured to death while we laugh.
