I watched this movie with an open mind and guess what, I actually quite enjoyed it.Sure the dialogue was hokey but the acting and stunt work was ok and it looked great.Also I think it told the story well enough.What exactly were you expecting when you knew john wayne was playing ghengis khan,a mongolian accent,whatever that sounds like.It was made in the 50s and this was what you got where foreign characters where involved, well this or a dodgy stereotypical accent.Nowadays if mel gibson done it you would get subtitles and I dont think that would have worked back then.So give the movie a break and just enjoy it for what it is.6/10

i couldnt stand this movie. The very idea of John Wayne playing a Mongolian was out of the moon n unfortunately it looked apalling too. An American woman as Borta? with make-up!!?? come on! pathetic, simply pathetic. Just compare this with the Oscar nominated "Mongol" which was great, realistic and showed some respect to the Mongolian culture rather than making a mockery like here.

You don’t think that some of the differences in authenticity may be due to the fact that “The Conqueror” was released in 1956 by an American company that filmed in Utah and California, while “Mongol” was released in 2007 by a Russian-German co-op that filmed in German studios and on locations in Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia?

Expectations kill films for some people... others are easily amused, like me... and not that I take glee in regaling this one for being 'bad'... I "just watch"... too many critics, and judgement, not enough charity... or willingness to be entertained, seeing vintage Hollywood. Dialog in movies from the '30s - '50s... is still very entertaining drama, quick biting jokes, and rapid-fire patter in many, seems not like what you see from today, except occasionally, unnoticed.

I found it entertaining. But i never bothered myself with the historical facts. I just thought of it as a movie. This does not deserve a 2,8/10. It's an average movie. See it as i saw it. For pleasure only.

I felt the same way, just seeing it last night. Definitely a 6/10, if you go in with an open mind and just want to be entertained. Not everything has to be Hamlet. Saw the same basic story lately in the Oscar-nominated Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan, which is 9/10, what you get when you go for that story the right way.

John Wayne made a more convincing Genghis Khan than Katharine Hepburn as a Chinese peasant woman in "Dragon Seed." And if you really want a laugh, try seeing the Japanese version of "Gone With the Wind"....White Southerners and American Blacks played by Japanese actors!

I'm watching it now and it's kind of a Western set in Mongolia. Not really that bad at all! The best part so far (besides the battle scenes) is when John Wayne pull off Susan Hayward's top. I think there was a bare breast for a second. Wayne also mentions something about "sharing the booty" and the camera cuts to Hayward. Others may pan this film, but it's good entertainment. Also, the Utah scenery is spectacular. And don't miss the sexy dancers!

Clean hair & skin, full makeup, shiny red lips, and polished fingernails, seen as she gives in and enjoys the kiss Khan first forces on her. Not likely in 13th century (?) Mongolia. On the other hand, Khan speaking in cowboy -ese was hilarious, I could hear the unspoken "pilgrim" at the end of his speeches
