I know exactly what you mean. My sister paid for her big wedding, and so did my brother. He went all out and rented the Hilton ballroom in Houston for the reception. The bride didn't have to pay for anything.
I know. In this instance, the bride didn't have any money. My brother at the time was a NASA scientist, so he had the money to pay for his own wedding.
They are no longer just weddings. They are productions. There's casting, costumes, rehearsals, props, entertainment..etc. Then there is the competitive "Keeping Up With the Jones'" mentality that a bride's wedding must top the others in impressing others. It is often that more planning, thought and effort are put in the wedding than is ever considered for the marriage.
Been with my partner 32 yrs and finally have the right to be married. We started thinking about all these wedding factors. Gonna elope.
Then again most of my friends were married by the time they were 20 with a child on the way. "Contraception" was not a commonly used word in Catholic circles in the 1960s.
