My first film disappointment and life's lesson

I had watched Gordon McRae in "The Desert Song," "Moonlight Bay" and "Oklahoma" when I was probably about 10-11 years old. Loved the films and singing, and of course the happily-ever-after endings.

When "Carousel" was on TV I was about 13 and I was thrilled to see him again - about 10 minutes into the movie when he meets Julie Jordan, I was appalled at what a snide and boorish character Billy Bigelow was.

I kept hoping that love would change his character - OH BROTHER HOW WRONG I WAS

I was bitterly disappointed especially when he hit Julie and Louise... not to mention participated in a robbery.

I was sooo shocked and so unhappy at this story that even "You'll Never Walk Alone" couldn't assuage my tears and fears.

I felt so heart-broken.... sob....

So a life's lesson learned yet again from Hollywood!

"Hi! Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?"
"Are they made from real Girl Scouts?"

Imagine that! A musical with human--not cardboard--characters, weighty issues, and real emotion!

Billy is a total jerk, a moronic thug who refuses to work, participates in a robbery, conspires to kill a guy, and slaps his wife and daughter around. People on this forum will blather on and on about how romantic and wonderful it all is because it has "weighty issues." Mental illness.

What’s the life lesson? Actors act? Bravo, glad Carousel helped you make that revelation.
