Perfect Father's Day Film

I watched it again on Father's Day with my daughter. It's the perfect Father's Day film.

Some fathers may develop a complex after watching it on Father's Day.

Wow.
...
That is the most disturbing thing I have heard in a very long time.

"I aim to misbehave."

reply

Wow.

Why?

Now I understand why you so voraciously (and poorly) defend this movie in so many threads from its obvious message that dads who beat their wives are AOK; they are just internally frustrated. In spite of you throwing around the 30 year old canard of "politically incorrect" (as if it were a talisman to magically destroy a counter-position), in 1961 the song "He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)" was at that time condemned. There has been a historical tendency among a certain type that slapping around a woman is OK (see Sean Connery). However there has been another historical trend from the late 19th century onwards to condemn this.

This move, the play, the original "Liliom" and even Lang's version is awful and disgusting, even with their snappy tunes and the devil-may-care attitudes. This deserves to be tossed on the scrap heap of history.

Woke up on the wrong side of the bed did you ? ...........blimey, I think you are way over the top !! ..............your final sentence is ridiculous..............I obviously agree with you about not hitting women, but this film is one of the best musicals ever made, with some of the best tunes ever written...............lighten up a little will you.

Jeanne, Gloria, Toby, Mitzi, Eleanor (2), Frances, Deborah, Marion, Alice, Darcey - are adorable.

Someone has beaten therefore-2 brainless, probably justifiably. No one is saying it's "A-OK" to beat wives, including R & H, but it takes someone with at least half a brain to recognize that, which lets therefore-2 out.

Whoever has been pounding therefore-2 in the head might as well stop, as the damage has been done.

I think therefore's reaction is a bit extreme, but I would agree that this film takes a jarringly romanticized view of domestic violence. My guess is that a lot of first-time viewers are likewise put off by this film. Why else would such a beautifully filmed musical with a flawless score have only a 6.8 imdb rating? I think watching this film with a daughter on Father's Day would be like inviting one's black friends over on Martin Luther King day to watch Gone With the Wind.

I watched this film on Father's Day with my daughter, and it was great (as she is not stupid).

I'm sure she's very bright. Next year, you should let her pick the movie for Father's Day. I hope she picks something less disturbing, like Cheaper by the Dozen or Father of the Bride (the non-Steve Martin versions, in both cases.)

We couldn't seem to agree on a film this Father's Day, so we watched my choice, "Carousel," again, with its exquisite songs, direction, screenplay, performances, musical supervision, orchestrations/arrangements, and choreography.

The all-time greatest film musical.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's exquisitely filmed, with some beautiful songs. It also romanticizes wife beating and child beating. The male lead is a moronic loser. It's all very bizarre, to anyone with a fully functioning brain.
