I love this actor, too, but, this the lighting of this film showed every line of his 48 year old heavy smoker's face. (The film was made two years before the 1957 release.) But, that's low budget for you. That said, I loved his acting here. When you look at the many films he appeared in in the late '50's, you have to appreciate his willingness to take on this small movie.

___I really liked Dan in The Little Foxes and Too Late for Tears. Unfortunately in this film he does look his age, big bags and lines under his eyes. Speaking of eyes, Jaynes are very heavy lidded and she is not very polished looking. But, it is regreshing to see her with a normal bustline. She turned herself into such a freakish cartoon. She had a natural prettyness which she should have capitalized on, Marilyn tried to edcape this image, Jayne kept pushing the envelope the other way. Both were left unsatisfied.

Duryea: I'm not sure what his looks had to do with it. If anything, his looks help support the role. He was an orphan, on his own, then a criminal from an early age. This one heist alone probably aged him ten years.

In fact, for all we know he was made up to look even more haggard, worn out, and old than he actually looked in real life. That lifestyle would take its toll on a person. The lighting, camera angles, and close ups, accentuated the look. The filmmakers saw what he looked like so it's no accident he wasn't made up to look fresh and pulled together. It wouldn't fit the character.

Mansfield: I agree about her. She looked so different than her usual self I didn't even recognize her at first. In this role she supposed to be attractive and sexy but if she looked like her later self it wouldn't have worked.

You say she should have capitalized on her natural prettiness. I think that's what she did. According to info in Trivia, she was cast in this movie because of the reaction of the crew in her last picture. Like many women who trade on their looks, she probably thought 'more is better'; bigger boobs, blonder hair, dumber persona, more makeup, etc.

Marilyn tried to edcape this image, Jayne kept pushing the envelope the other way. Both were left unsatisfied.
Monroe: It's interesting you say Marilyn Monroe tried to escape her image. I don't know how that's possible. Maybe she was ambivalent about it but I doubt she was completely unhappy with it. If she wanted to escape it, she could have easily changed her image. She could have lost the platinum hair, stopped accentuating her body, and dropped the breathy talk, and gone after different roles.

Yes, it would have been difficult but that's always the case when someone decides to make a change. She may not have liked being treated like a piece of meat all the time but I'm sure she didn't want to give up all the perks that went with it. Had she lived into old age I suspect she would have had the same look like many old ladies that still try to look as they did in their heyday.

MDonin,
___About Duryea's looks in this film, I was simply commenting on the OP thoughts, and adding my own. I did not originate the idea.
___I think Monroe did change her image quite a bit. Aside from looking different in almost every film she did, she was certainly not the Monroe of the 50's in the early 60's. She had bannished the obvious sexuality of the early 50's, and had a much more streamlined and classy look by 1962. This change has been noted in several documentaries as well as by co-stars, friends, and rivals like Sherree North. No, she could not change her hair color and still be MM, but she could, and did change the trappings. Jayne, on the other hand got more and more ridiculous. That awful last film, 'Single Room Furnished', she was beyond laughable in a mini skirt, awful wig, and an enormous top pointing to the North Pole. And, she was supposed to be playing a high school girl, Ugh!
