John Payne's character Matt Brad, was mean + bitter from very beginning.

John Payne's character, Matt Brady, was mean & bitter from the very beginning. The film starts with Matt Brady leading a troop of returning WWI veterans in a parade. Other than his smiles here and his going to the sidewalk to greet and kiss his girlfriend his demeanor through out the movie is mean and bitter. There was never a change - John Payne played his character very one dimensional and flat. Disappointing!

Actually, there were many scenes where his character was soft and tender. Remember the scene where he meets his wife, Lorry. I thought it was terrific acting, and I would rank it with Pacino and Muni's Scarface, as well as Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, and Robert Deniro's gangster portrayals.
