Agreed - she wasn't well cast. Firstly, she didn't look mixed race, and she spoke in a midatlantic accent instead of in the 'chi-chi' Eurasian accent she had in the book.
The point was somewhat lost that women like her were often very beautiful and attractive, but for racial and cultural reasons didn't 'fit in' with either the British or the Indians. She just looked like a very beautiful western woman to me.
Though the believability of Gardner as a Anglo-Indian can be questioned, she gave a good performance. Bhowani Junction itself was a good drama.
"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".
Thought she acted about as well as she usually does. This kind of role was not really ideal for her though. She didn't really ever learn to truly inhabit characters. She was best playing an exaggerated version of the person she was in real life.
