What happened to the proposed re-make?

In 2006 I read on IMDB that a remake of this film had been started. What happened to it? Can`t remember now who the director was going to be, or who was to star in it. Anyway, all references to it appear to have been removed.

It was going to be made by Fox and Regency and was first announced in 2005, with a possible 07 release date. It was going to be written by Franc Reyes (no, me neither, but he apparently helmed a John Leguizamo vehicle called "Empire"), who was also slated to direct. Perhaps fortunately, depending on your point of view, it never got any further than that - I'm not even sure a cast was announced. You'd probably have to ask Mr Reyes exactly why, but he still seems to be in work, at least according to his IMDb page.
If anyone has any further information, I'd love to read it.

It's in pre-production right now but the info isn't here yet. Michael Douglas and Amber Tamblyn were casted for it.

...with Peter Hyams as the director. I imagine there will be plenty of plot changes, though, since these pages provide one long spoiler for Douglas Morrow's story.

Actually, Michael Douglas isn't too bad a choice to play Dana Andrews...

Looks like filming will be in Shreveport, LA. They came to our crime lab to see if they could use it in the film.

This story kinda reminds me of The Life of David Gale (2003) starring Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet.

reply

I thought that, too, Starline, and that wasn't the greatest film ever. Didn't do much business, either. From the little plot I've been able to glean, Michael Douglas isn't playing the Dana Andrews part (as I had idly speculated above), but rather a corrupt DA. I imagine he tries to prosecute someone for a murder, and the big reveal will be that he did it himself.

I think the thing that most let THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE down was that it kept getting all het-up about the death penalty, rather than just being a thriller. Lang just uses the death penalty as a hook on which to hang one of his characteristic indictments of society; one hopes that Mr Hyams and his writers don't try to make this overtly political - the whole idea of it depresses me.

Thanks for the feedback, bmi. Just took a look at the boards for the remake, and there's one previewer saying it's "bangin'", and another saying it's just terrible. I still fear the worst.

reply

yeah its not even close to bangin. ill put it this way, since i saw it for free i found it enjoyable. if i would have paid for it i wouldve been pretty upset. its honestly not that good, but i find it easier to enjoy movies when i dont pay for them.

The re-make was made in 2009. It was terrible. Do not waste your time watching it. Now (November 2012) is shown in some TV channels as a "late-night movie".

Wow - your post is a year old, and it's still not out yet. The IMDb lists it as a September 11, 2009 release. Why am I thinking that it might go straight to video?

What's with Douglas and remakes? First A Perfect Murder, which at least made 67 million domestic, but The In-Laws tanked at only 20 million domestic.

Hey sandwiches, how are the holidays going for you and yours? Since I put up that above post, I had the chance to see the remake on cable - but I can't say that it was time well spent.
