Did anyone think the newspaper publisher was a better candidate?

Yep, I thought he was the murderer. I figured he was going to destroy the evidence that would prove Dana Andrews innocence. That pipe sealed the deal for me. Whoops! Good thing I'm not a DA!

I thought for sure that he did it, or would otherwise destroy the evidence of the planted evidence so that Tom Garrett gets executed for a crime he didn't commit.

He was actually already smoking that pipe in some of the early scenes.
