Can't tell the difference between the British and the Germans.

Everyone in the film is British and the British actors playing Germans don't even attempt German accents making it impossible to tell who is who when they are switching back and forth in the battle sequence. Is anyone else really struggling with this?

The Germans are the ones on board the Graf Spee. The British (& New Zealanders) are the ones on the smaller ships 

The Germans aren't depicted at all during the battle sequences (a real weak area of the movie, in my opinion, but that's another matter). I think maybe you're confused by the use of the British POWs, who were stowed in the Graf Spee during the battle sequence, being shown. Naturally, they are British actors playing British characters.

agreed.

with the way this film jumps around (with *both* time and location and a tommy playing the main jerry captain) one cannot help but be confused.

it is the weakest point of this production, which should have been much greater.
