Forced upon us

I went to school in Illinois. This crap was shoved into our eyes several times a year. With every forced viewing I rooted more and more for the little french bullies to throw those rocks and bring down that hated baloon. Back then I was shocked how many rocks it took to knock it down but then I figured a country without baseball would be full of girly throwers. The French national passtime is a game called "capitulation" . Ours is baseball. The liberal teachers were trying to soften us American boys with this Frenchy baloon movie. Thank god we had the Three Stooges,Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry to show us that violence is not only funny but cool also.

reply

Wow, you are a sad little man. I'm assuming you are a male, for only an overload of testosterone could have written such fearful and provincial vitriol. Your point is that you hate balloons, is it? Or no...that even at fifth grade your loving parents had already taught you the finer points of nationalistic hatred--the good Nazi Germans of yore would be proud of such xenophobia. Well, when you live in Illinois--the center of the universe--who needs the rest of the world. Or books. Or literature. Or art. Nah, nevermind that. After all, we've got the Three Stooges and '50s kiddie cartoons. That'll surely make us "American boys" tough as nails and violent as all hell. Great. That will explain our wanton imperialist invasions of downtrodden nations, torture and abuse of detainees in Guantanamo and those we pawn off to Syria and Egypt for torture. It's great to be a violent "American."

reply

Your a sad little socialist.I'm assuming you live in a third world toilet. Is your point that you hate Americans. Did your parents teach you this while instructing you to sift through garbage for your next meal? Surely a diet of garbage and anti-American rhetoric makes you "third world boys" tough as nerf footballs.(thats FOOTBALLS,not soccer balls)

It is great to be an American. Maybe if you wiggle under the fence you can be one also.

reply

While I wrote a reply to "the sad little socialist", I also recommend EVERYONE just relax from the nastiness of the thread. Vent it on a movie (like The Red Balloon), not on eachother. This doesn't need to be personal.

It's just a movie! How can hating it make you a NAZI?! I didn't realize liking or disliking a particular movie made you anything. Imperialist invasions?! Whoa,....relax. It's just a movie. I think you might just be on the wrong board.

Your attacking Americans would be about as called for as someone attacking the French or any other nation. You may disagree with the policies (that's DEFINITELY your right) but relax with the rhetoric. I would never think to insult anyone because of the country they came from, as this is just a cheap shot. For example, I LOVE the film "The Color of Paradise". It's an Iranian film. While I am not a fan of their government, I must admire the beauty of this film.

Oh, by the way. Although due to political correctness you CANNOT insult anyone, why is it okay to insult a poster because "he's a man"? ANY insult is bad.

Remember this is just a friendly message board. All opinions should be welcome.

HERE, HERE==I salute another RED BALLOON hater! Any teacher who would show this crap should be strung up! That said, I must admit I AM a school teacher, but I would NEVER show this to the kids (unless I got a class I really HATED--this COULD be a great punishment)!

reply

Tsk,tsk, tsk. Coming from a teacher no less.
I guess it's true what they've said all along.
"Those who can't....teach"

reply

Well, my seventh period has ticked me off for the last time, and by God, this movie is waiting for them. The minute Spring Break is over, The Red Balloon Cometh.

reply

you are perhaps the most evil teacher since my own tenured union hack who kept "The Red Baloon" on a torture loop....at least send a warning note home so the kids can have the choice to stay home and do something better like XBOX or heroin

reply

Beauty forced upon you?

The rest of the world should be so blessed.

reply

"Beauty" The little french flick was "crap".

reply

This little film was wonderful. Fond memories of grade school. Forced to watch it? I don't think so... If you hated it fine... but forced to watch it? I don't think so.

reply

Yeah I was forced. Unless you remember the ability in grammar school to say to the teacher "mind if I sit this one out Mrs.Crabtree...I'm just gonna run out to the swingset and grab a smoke while you watch this sh*t"

Clear it up any?

reply

Oh my goodness. You must have had a terrible childhood. You poor thing!
Fortunately for me, my parents always taught me to stand up for myself.
Needless to say, I spent alot of time in the Principle's office but I never did ANYTHING I didnt want to. Kudos to your parents though. They have obviously raised a very resentful and angry person so unhappy with themselves that they have to post such negativity on internet message boards. Cheers to you and yours.

reply

You got all of that just because I didnt like this rotton little movie? Your the type of person who looks into the toilet a long time before they flush arent you.
If you were in the Principals office it wasnt because your parents taught you to "stand up". I'd bet you were "bent over".

You poor thing.

reply

Bitter.. party of one please.. Bitter party of one.....
Nice comeback Potsie and so pathetically predictable. Juvenille toilet humor
and a very lame gay reference. What did they hold to your head, forcing you to watch that film? A gun or a dildo? I read you like a book. A Sandra Boynton book. I "got all of that" as you so eloquently put it, from reading your past comments. Stand proud Mr. RGent1701. You are truly a "unique" individual. Your
"Mrs. Crabtree" at that terrible grade school of yours must have caused irreparable damage filling your head with such loathesome propaganda forcing you to watch that that wotten wittle Fwench Movie. Oh the Humanity!!

reply

Red Balloons, Marching Penguins, Parrots on a San Francisco hilltop...What has the world of cinema evolved into??? Children should only be exposed to Terminator/Rambo movies & violent video games. How dare Mr. Crabgrass subject his unsuspecting stoodents to a genteel film that depicts a world without computer generated special effects, blood, destruction and Hummers!!!

p.s. Mr RGenital: If you find the balloon movie repulsive, stay a million miles from an Italian flick called THE BICYCLE THIEF (not to be confused with 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure) = this may set you off for the therapy you desperately need:>

reply

Like it if you want. I could give a rats a*s. I call it Franco-crap because it is. A wittle bawoon fwoating awound gay Parie........

Terminator and Rambo are from the 80's. Get with the program. Tom & Jerry, the Stooges and Bugs Bunny. Timeless.

reply

Oh thank you for blessing us Franco-crap lovers with your approval oh repressed one.
Tom and Jerry, The Stooges, Bugs are classic. I'll agree with you on that. Simple pleasures satisfy simple minds Ncest pas?. Now go eat a hot dog, drink some beer, and beat up some queers.

What's the definition of a virgin that grew up in your neighborhood??
An ugly 8 year old who can outrun her brothers.
I hear that incest runds rampant in the Midwest especially in Ill.
Could it be your parents are siblings? Bet you hate people of color too.
Insecure,self-important,faux... what?? no lame gay reference this time?
No infantile toilet humor? Could it be your on the road to an actual intelligent response ?? No ?? Perhaps a brilliant Bugs Bunny remark??

Although a reply to a 5+ year old post, I had to laugh as TCM is showing both back to back as I read your post !! Me thinks someone at TCM responsible for the programing musta read through this thread and has intentionally set these 2 to run concurrently just to tweak a few of the haters here LOL !

reply

Dude, maybe if you spent more time in the classroom, you'd know how to spell "principal."

reply

This movie was probably forced on a few hundred thousand kids between the 1960's and the early 1970's. I now have fond memories of this movie and it only took 35 years ;D

Here's a brief list of "forced movies" we were shown in grammar/middle school.

Paddle to the Sea - Was my favorite.

The Guns of Navarone - Man they showed this movie so many times its not even funny.

The Birds - Had to have seen this movie four or five times at various times during my schooling years.

Bless the Beasts and the Children - Never liked this movie. "Church on fire!, church on fire!, put it out!, put it out!"

Red Asphalt - Famous drivers education film. Not as gore laden as legend had it... even in 1974/5.

Shop Films (wood/metal) - I forget the name of the character they used as the guinea pig for this - "Slip up Sam" or "Primitive Pete"? he would crush, sever or puncture body parts on circular saws, drill presses, wheel grinders, joiners and planers. Always a good laugh.

So let me understand this. If I dont like this franco-crap I'm a knuckle dragging caveman? This little "art" film WAS forced upon us in grade school. When told it was on the grammar school film schedule again and again and again it was always met with groans and moans out of the students.

Elitist snobs always think they know whats good and best for others. I accept that. Masterpiece Theater I suppose has a certain audience also. I would guess you watch or listen to things that you think are "cultured" or "intellectual" whether you understand it or not,and heap praise upon it.

Do yourself a favor. Dont post anymore. People see through you. Keep sending money to PBS,Greenpeace,NPR,PETA and the Democratic party.

reply

<Keep sending money to PBS,Greenpeace,NPR,PETA and the Democratic party>
Being a Conservative Republican, I would rather chew glass than send money to any of those above mentioned and once again, you have failed miserably
with your asinine conclusions.
Elistist snob? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I never called you a knuckle dragging caveman. I called you angry and resentful. All that other nonsense was me having fun pissing you off.
I simply enjoyed the "franco-crap" film and doubted that you were forced to watch it but hey If you say so. You were there. Your obviously someone who can "dish it out" but can't take it.
Tell you what. Why don't you do yourself a favor. Read your last sentence and practice what you preach.

What does politics have to do with a charming old film about a lonely little boy raised by his grandmother, whose best friend turns out to be a balloon? So what that it was made in France? It could have been made in another country and been just as charming. Really, people like you have no romance in their souls. It IS all ugliness and bitterness with you.

reply

Although your post is now 5+ years old, I have to say 'ditto' (pun intended). Anyone who happens to watch FOX news, agrees with or belongs to the 'Tea Party', supported GW Bush/Iraq etc., gets smeared with the same brush due to rants by guys like this. BTW, someone mentioned something about this poster "probably hated 'March of the Penguins'... (too) or something close. The poster sounded like the typical Rush/Beck hater so I found it ironic that none other than Rush Limbaugh himself raved about this particular movie (Penguins). And, unlike what the 'Rush haters' believe about Rushs audience, I didn't rush right out to see the movie just because he recommended it LOL !! In fact, I've yet to see the movie all these years later ! Not that I don't want to watch it, just haven't had the opportunity.

How anyone could find a problem in/with this movie is beyond me. 'Haters' are haters no matter which 'side' they're on... bless they're black little hearts.

OP and 1st responder: Voted "Most likely to take out 20 or more people with a sniper rifle from atop a bell tower".

The difference between the OP and I is that I have no problem with the 'boarding' issue and do not consider it 'torture' (when used to get actionable intel. to prevent imminent attack(s). OP would do it (boarding) just for sh*ts and giggles.

reply

Yeah.....I'd pull the fingernails out of that little French baloon if I could.

Just for sh*ts n giggles.

reply

I think people are taking this post way too seriously. I believe it was intend to be a joke. I too had to watch this movie every year in elementary school and although I found it a bit bizarre once I'd seen it a couple times it did become a bit tedious.

reply

So would any film if you saw it over and over again. But that doesn't mean the film BY ITSELF is not a charming and sweet film, indeed, even a beautiful film. The viewers' perceptions don't change what the film IS.

reply

I like how imdb posters have no sense of humor, the first response the OP gets is an anti-American response

Nah, you're a knuckle dragging caveman because of everything else you've said.

Oh lordy.

Yup ...... I meant every word but the responders to the OP took my inch and stretched it a mile. All good fun.

In the end all "The Red Baloon" to me was a nice opportunity to take a nap.
