How did the director make this without the use of special effects?
A Healthy Mix of Boundless Imagination, Artistic Talent and Technical Skill.
It's a rare thing to see that combination in a Feature these days.
We usually see some mixture of two; imagination + skill, but low talent, for ex.*
This is also a good example that an artist can be Childlike without being Childish.
However, the premise of the question is flawed: There are Special Effects, they're just not Computer Generated.
* Reminds me of the attitude in some workplaces:
You can have it Good, Fast and Cheap;
Please pick two.
You Fill Me with Inertia.
