I saw Red Balloon in grade school. I was charmed at the time. But now, watching with adult eyes..am I the only one that finds the balloons creepy?
In the end the balloons capture and take the boy away to a sure death! All with that super sappy music! NOW THAT IS PURE EVIL!
In retrospect, those gang of kids were heroes, rescuing the boy!
I couldn't agree more! I've always thought this since I saw the film as a small child. The red balloon is obviously trying to kill the boy throughout the film. It tries to get him to fall from the balcony, it takes him through busy traffic, it's an evil globe of death. I've been terrified of balloons my whole life and the root of this phobia is, I think buried in this film.

shareThe ending immediately reminded me of the gothic ending of The Piped Piper of Hamelin - the balloons ultimately are stealing this kid!! And keep in mind it happens immediately after he decides to pop the red balloon - these rubber blow toys are out for vengeance!!
