Nancy Kelly - 35 years old - good God!

I can't believe she was only 35 at the time the film was made. I would've believed 55.

reply

I remember Patty Mcormick saying in the commentary that Nancy was a lot younger than she looked. Something about how the styles back then made people appear a lot older.

So true. You see this wirh most actors from yesteryear; the styles and demeanor.
I met Patty a few times.

reply

Yes, you put a 35 year old woman from today in a hairstyle like Nancy's and the clothing and she would look a lot older.

reply

agreed.

wow, i cant believe that! she looked much older! but it was NOT the style or demeanor. she looked liked she drank heavily and sounded like a smoker. not sure if this is true, but you can clearly see the bags under her eyes, and her voice sounded scratchy and squealy, kinda like how lucille ball sounded in the later seasons of i love lucy. that might account for the aged look she has, not the style.

reply

I think if they ever made a remake the woman should kind of appear broken down like that. Not necessarily look older but during the course of the movie she should start getting dark circles and bags under her eyes. And make it apparent that she starts drinking to cope with her problem. Not have her appear as a drunk but you know show that she's mentally and physically falling apart. Julia Stiles could play the mother in the remake. She kind of has that proper uptight demeanor that was portrayed in the Christine character.

Clever you mentioned Julia Stiles back in 2012. Looked at her credits and the projects she's in have some darkish titles. One even a dark, haunted house, thriller theme - Out of the Dark.
Wouldn't have thought of her myself since just Bourne ones & name are all I
bave to go by. But see she was in renake of The Omen in 2006 as the mother.
The First is about Mary Picfford but title could be about sci-fi or horror.

She was only 35?!!! Wow, she sure looked older! I would have guessed at around 45 at least!
I agree with the above poster that said it wasn't just her style or demeanor.
She had an older 'look' about her that spoke of substance issues and even a sun worshipper. Genetics too of course.
That's not to say she wasn't attractive, as she was, she had a pleasant face.
But she didn't look like 35 at all.

Stress can make people appear older. A friend of mine is going through that now.

I agree-I was curious about the actress and looked up her bio page and was pretty shocked to see her age at the time of filming. I watch a lot of old films - especially from the 1950's and I find that during that decade women definitely looked older than they do today. I think it's a combination of the fashion, darker make-up and hair-styles.

I was recently watching "Marty" and Marty's mother, who is a widow, was talking about how her life is pretty much over - she was approximately 50! I thought she was in her late 60's. They had her dressed like an old Italian widow-All black, no makeup, steel grey hair in a bun. I'm fifty, in great shape and certainly don't feel like my life is almost over.

Eileen Ekhart wasn't much older, 36-37.

Another example of how people all looked older during the '50s is "Rebel Without a Cause." I always thought that Natalie Wood, James Dean, and Sal Mineo looked like they were in their 30s, even though they were portraying high school students and the actors themselves were younger. It was the style then ~~ even teenagers IRL who were not movie characters wanted to look older. I was in junior high then, and we dressed like we were in our 20s with mid-calf sheath skirts and tailored blouses, as though we were dressed to take the train downtown and work in an office. When I was in college in the early '60s, we all dressed like Jackie Kennedy! It wasn't until the mid-to-late '60s that the "Youth Movement" caught on ~~ since Twiggy and the British Invasion, everyone has wanted to look younger than their chronological years ~~ and that desire to look younger continues even now!

Amazing, isn't it!! I was recently looking at my 1968 yearbook (12 grade school), and the high school kids looked like grownups!! The girls had the beehive hairdos, and we all had to wear dresses due to the dress code. Oh, and the glasses made everybody look older! I totally remember Twiggy, and the change in dress that occured in the late 1960s. Generations since then have tried to copy our "hippie" look, but they just can't pull it off like we did.

I would have guessed mid 50's.

She looked closer to 50 to me.

I saw this for the first time tonight and I was struck off the bat by her age--or what I believed her age to be. I was taken aback because in the book the mother is young and hot. This actress is pretty and a great actress and it doesn't impact the story because the parts from the book where her looks are a factor were not included at all so ultimately it doesn't matter but still, it wasn't what I expected.

I agree with some other posters here that the actress looked about 50 and it was not just because of the clothing and hair--although I think a better hairstyle might have helped a lot.

Dick, I am VERY disappointed.

reply

I thought she was about 52. That is kind of surprising but I've seen many people who look much older and much younger than their actual age.

reply

i'm surprised she looked as young as she did....having that psycho demon child is bound to age any mother and make them go grey haired earlier!!...but i think at the end of the movie when Nancy is having fun with Patty and put her over her knee and spanking her,was more like the real Nancy haha
