R Rating?

How bad IS this film? I plan on watching it soon, but was it given the R rating simply because it was risque for the time, or is it truly that sexual?

Of course we're living in sin.

It would get a PG today for sexual content.....it's even really tame for that rating.

It was controversial in its day, but it isn't by today's standards. It is impressive that nearly everyone in the movie is still living -- the only one who has passed on is Mildred Dunnock, and she lived to be around 90. Karl Malden and Eli Wallach are both past 90.

I thought it was weird how one person on here said morals don't change. uh, yeah they do because people change they way they view morals and family values and content in movies based on what the modern morals around them, in their country are. I really can't believe that it is rated R. it has to be the tamest movie ever rated R. no swearing no sex, no hardcore violence, no nudity. all it has is the kind of offensive image of a girl who is like a little girl in her mind being in a relationship with a 40 year old man. but she doesn't act immature and she is almost 20 years old so there is nothing morally wrong with a 20 or even 18 year old being with a 40 year old. sure he tried having sex with her but big deal. it needs to be rerated to PG-13 at the most adult rating even if it's never resubmitted to the MPAA. I really think the MPAA should rerate movies automatically to the current values and morals and standards of decency in America. a movie like The Evil Dead, for instance shouldn't be rated NC-17 for crying out loud.

Automatic re-ratings would never happen. The MPAA isn't some kind of public service organization; it's a private association that serves the interests of a for-profit industry. They don't do their thing for free.

A movie will be only re-rated if it is re-submitted, most likely by the current rights holder or distributor, along with a processing fee that could be up to $25,000. Apparently, Warner Bros. has never seen reason to do so for this movie.

I think Carol is primarily the only one still around. Regarding the main stars anyway. It is tame compared to today's racier films!
