Shirley Maclaine was gorgeous

a young Shirley Maclaine looked splendid in this movie, I remember seeing this back in the 80's for the first time and she was absolutely stunning especially when she was dressed in the Chinese gown. gorgeous

I agree. She was very beautiful in Around the World in Eighty Days.

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!

I think she does while they were in India, later her face has become more "euroatlantic". And she was only 22 in this film!
But I don't understand why she isn't higher in the credits, probably they have range them chronologically and not by relevance same as the closing credits of the film are sorted.
I have seen this film today for the first time (on TV in Czechia) and I must say I love it, it's very pleasant film.

yes, the credits were arranged chronologically. the cartoon at the end shows all scenes in order and the names appear at the points when the actors appeared in the movie.

she was just amazing

A fine woman indeed.

There's nowhere near as much real beauty, class or talent with modern Hollywood leading ladies as there was with the likes of Joan Bennett, Eva Marie Saint, Cyd Charisse, Ingrid Bergman and the wonderful Ms MacLaine. I'd include Grace Kelly, but she couldn't act.

PS I'm not as old as this comment might make me seem.

I like all your choices, but my all time favorite is Audrey Hepburn. Beauty, charm and all the rest. And I'm as old as this comment makes me seem.

Oh yeah, she is really a beautiful woman at her young age. The first time I realized this is when I saw Apartment. Gorgeous. If I were Michael Todd, there would be no lost if I choose her over Elizabeth Taylor.

reply

agreed!! she was stunning in this movie in particular, as she usually likes short hair, but she had longer hair in this movie. it suited her well

I recently came across a 15-year-old New York Times article entitled "...And Some Call For a Voice." The article claimed that Shirley MacLaine's voice was entirely dubbed in this movie. To confirm this, I watched clips from some of her movies in the 50's and early 60's - specifically, The Trouble With Harry, Artists and Models, and The Apartment - in order to get a strong sense of what her voice actually sounded like at the time. Then I viewed a few clips from 80 Days, and her voice was noticably different. In particular, her characteristic slight drawl had disappeared. Granted, we may have a voice coach to thank for this, but it is definitely possible that MacLaine's voice was dubbed. Anyone care to produce evidence to refute this claim?

I haven't seen her in 80 days but I've seen her in Apartment, and it proved my theory that the classic actresses are more beautiful and gorgeous than the modern ones.

reply

Yeah, too bad she hardly looked Indian at all. Same deal with West Side Story.

reply

Yes, for that exact reason. It's mentioned in James Robert Parish's ''The Paramount Pretties'' (1972) in his chapter on Shirley's film career.
