A posing Question???

I've watched this film a couple of times now and still can't fathom whether she was or wasn't the Princess. I know I suppose it's up to the individual to come to their own conclusion...I'm just wondering if anyone else had doubts or believed???...

To anyone who hasn't seen 'Anastasia' do yourself a favour and watch it, you won't be disappointed. (A subtle recommendation...).

To be honest, I'm not too sure one way or the other. The film does lead us to believe to a certain point, then it throws a hidden doubt into the works. So to this end my mind is not fully convinced the film was depicting she was the Grand Duchess Anastasia. It was bouncing back and forth to a somewhat inconclusive ending.

After reading your response I was curious about the mention of DNA testing.....and I did find it in the trivia section for this film. My reluctance in believing such a detail would be me asking the question, "how would they be able to do this"???

the mystery was solved through DNA examination of a small piece of tissue cut from Anna in an operation years before.
Understanding it was set in the early 1920's and guessing how old Anna was at the time, this is really difficult to accept and I also have my doubts to it's credibility.

Anyway, thanks for your response.

in reality she wasn´t Anastasia, but in the movie she was.
actuelly this movie is pretty close to Animated Anastasia 1997.
only this one is more realistic.
when they made this film they never heard of anything called DNA testing, poeple had to ASSUME a hell of a lot more than now days.

I think that in the rests of the Imperial Family found in the '90s there was no trace of Anastasia. That means she was never killed and buried there with the others.

reply

where the hell did you see that, cus the thing was they missed a body, but not anastasia´s body.
It was Tatiana´s body.

It is in the official reports after finding the rests that there were two bodies missing, that of Anastasia and Alexei. I think the scientists could say so because they can read the age from the bones, and all the bones found belong to older people than that. What happened to them is not known, I believe.

1, how can you escape from a cellar with a room full of men with guns.
2, why hide all your life, while you can later run to denmak to, Grandmama.
3, isn´t it possible that some of the bodies where burned, for confussion.

the Documantary on National Geographic said, that it was Tatiana´s body that was missing.
(they kinda whent on a goosecase for it).
Alexej would have died anyway, even if he survived, because of his illness.
they can´t exacly see, how old a bone is.
they have to match it with other bones.
they have to make a, timeline, so they can put it together.

than again nobody is ever going to prove, that something is right or false.

1. noone could ever escape from a cellar like that - but when they transported the bodies out of it, there was plenty of confusion about many things, and the reds were in a hurry, since the white army was really getting close. So there might be the possibility that two bodies did not go to finish where the others did - noone can ever say they were still alive, but they were not buried were the others were.
2. Grandmama never ever ever accepted to see anyone that pretended to be one of her grandoughters - do not believe in what you see in the movies.
3. the bodies were all treated with acid and burned - there were still some remainings there to bury.
4. it's a different think to know how old a bone is and another to say how old a child is by getting an x-ray of his bones - the method is used everywhere to see if children do grow up OK.
5. scientists did much more than match the bones, they collected DNA from relatives and matched that as well.

The truth of what happened to those missing may never come out, but the truth the reds (and the english royal family) wanted to bury forever did came out, eventually, didn't it ?

2, why hide all your life, while you can later run to denmak to, Grandmama.
In real life, the Dowager Empress refused to believe that any of the family were killed. To her death, she maintained the delusion that they had all survived and were living somewhere in secret. She would never welcome anyone claiming to be the sole surviving member of the family.

There are some who claim that the basement room at the Ipatiev house was so small and crowded that it would actually have been difficult to execute everyone with sureness and efficiency. There were also some witnesses at the time who claim that the Red authorities were seeking Anastasia in the area in the days following the execution.

At the time of her death (actually during her physical examination in hiding in dobolsk, Anastasia was barely 3 ft tall. She was by far the shortest of her sisters. The body buried at the church in Russia bearing the name Anastasia Nicolaevna Romanov was measured by American, English, Russian, and French anthropologists at the following heights : 5'8'' , 5'7''3/4 , 5'7"1/2, and 5'8". This would mean Anastasia grew approxiamately 5 in less than 2 months.

*I cannot say I believe nor disbleive Anderson's claim. Only that I do not believe Anastasia was found in Siberia with the rest of the family nor is she buried with her sisters in Russia.

The 2003 DVD release of this Bergman movie has some great extras. It included clips of the real Tsar and Romanov family and the A&E Biography of Anastasia. Definitely worth a watch if you get the chance. I've always taken the movie as a great Cinderella story and never knew about the real Anna Anderson until I saw the documentary.

To answer some questions: DNA from "Anna Anderson" was available because she had undergone intestinal surgery in the US, and part of her intestines had been removed and preserved. So DNA was available to compare, and the DNA tests were negative for the Grand Duchess Anastasia (surprise, surprise....).
The documentaries that I have seen all confirmed that all of the members of the Romanov imperial family were killed, and I believe that at the end the remains were returned to St Petersburg for burial (but I'm not certain about the last part). I just think it highly unlikely that the revolutionaries set about the task of killing 8 people, and mistakenly couldn't completely their task successfully. Also--Anastasia was 17 years old in 1918---how could she only be 3 feet tall? That's highly unlikely. Also--how could it be that a 17-year old princess come to forget who she was, assuming she did escape somehow. One would expect that she would be trumpeting her survival to everyone from the time she reached safety, not wait 10 years. My opinion, FWIW.

There is much speculation as to which the the Grand Duchesses are missing. Some say it is Tatiana, some say Maria, and some say Anastasia. Even though two bodies were missing, it is highly, HIGHLY unlikely that anyone survived. In Yurovsky's (the executioner) note, two of the bodies were cremated. This might account for laexei and the missing Grand Duchess.

That's an interesting article, but keep in mind it's not written by professional scientists. These are fans of the Romanovs who came to their conclusions by looking at photographs and reading articles. They've amassed quite a lot of knowledge on the imperial family, but they have no forensic training, and have not examined the remains.

If you want more information on the remains, as well as the controversy of the missing bodies, I recommend:
The Fate of the Romanovs, by Greg King and Penny Wilson

Romanovs: The Final Chapter, by Robert Massie.

There's also a fine discussion forum devoted to the Romanov family, with plenty of threads about the missing remains and Anna Anderson: http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php

There's a lot of misinformation floating around on this board regarding the Anderson case and the missing remains, so I highly recommend the Alexander Palace Discussion Forum as a more reliable resource on these subjects.

@marzmello: I agree! Just watched it last night. The DVD extras were excellent, particularly the inclusion of the A&E Biography. (On another note -- LOVED the scenes with Helen Hayes and Ingrid Bergman!!)

I've directed the play version. It is pretty clear that the playwright intended us to believe Anna was the real Anastasia, but that she decided to give up the past. In essense, Anna lets her "Anastasia" die. This serves two purposes. We can enjoy the idea that she survived, and it leaves the mystery of her disappearance as tantalizing as ever.

I read that when the daughters were first shot at, the bullets bounced off of their bodices because they had precious stones sewn in them. Those garments were either removed or the soldiers shot at other parts of their bodies. But, this was a book that came out in the 1970s. And, it may have been the older girls who wore the gems.
