Why Helen Hayes wasn't nominated for an Oscar in this?

She would be a shoo-in to win a supporting actress trophy, and she totally overshadows everyone else here!

Hayes was terrific! She definitely deserved a nomination! But I think no one could overshadow Bergman.

Let us be crooked, but never common.

The studio apparently submitted her as a lead - back then voters did not choose for themselves where to place an actor. Obviously, while she is terrific in the role, she would have no shot in lead for such a relatively brief role.

Marie Windsor in The Killing would be my personal pick for Best Supporting Actress of 1956, but Hayes is a strong contender.
