Ahead of its time

There has never been a comedian like Steve Allen, and no show like this one. The "Man of the Street" interviews were always a favorite of mine, and Steve's off-the-wall humor was even funnier than David Letterman at his best. I wish one of the cable networks would run these shows. At a time of great competition for variety shows, this one stood out in its uniqueness.

Steve Allen was amazing. I had the good fortune to see him live a few times back in the early '90s.

Whether singing the items on a Mexican restaurant's menu as a sultry 'South of the Border' number, or asking for 4 random musical notes from the audience & immediately composing a jazzy tune with just those notes, to recounting stories of the later years of vaudeville and sharing the stage with his mother the (great Belle Montrose), he was always able to keep the audience right in the palm of his hand.

They don't make performers like him anymore.
