Charles Emerson Winchester III?

Prior to watching this great film yesterday, I'd only ever seen Ustinov in 'Poirot roles' when I was a kid, which I don't really remember. In the interim, of course, M*A*S*H came out. While watching "We're No Angels" I was struck by how 'Winchester-like' Ustinov's character was. Was he (Ustinov) always like this? Did David Ogden Stiers ever acknowledge pulling mannerisms or his Winchester voice from Ustinov?

Hey Belacane,

I have seen this film perhaps half a dozen times over nearly sixty years, and I never gave a thought of David Ogden Stiers when I was watching Ustinov in it. Now that you have mentioned it, I do see some of Ustinov's "look and feel" in Stiers as I recall him in "MASH."

While I have never been a great fan of Ustinov, I certainly would say I was something of a fan when it comes to Stiers. I thank you for noting the similarity and developing a better appreciation for both actors.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Ogden Stiers certainly has a droll, condescending approach to the delivery of his lines, that is similar to Ustinov.

Hadn't noticed but I'll watch for it now.
I think someone else stole/studied Ustinov's expressions as played in this film: John Goodman. Especially his performances in Cohen Brothers films.

Interesting thought, but personally I don't really see it. Which John Goodman roles are you thinking of?
