The Telescope Isn't That Old!

The telescope was invented in 1608, 5 years after the death of Elizabeth, yet not only does this movie show EI using that instrument, but countless movies set in the Edad Media=Middle Age also commit that flagrant anachronism.

I wonder when the enema bag was invented?

Let it be unsaid: insignificance is the locus of true increpation.

If you were to ask 100 people when the telescope was invented, I doubt any would know, and I think most would be off by at least 50 years. I'm sure movie-goers in 1955 had no clue either especially since they couldn't just look things up on the Internet. The movie also seems to think Leicester and Hatton are alive when Elizabeth learns of Raleigh and Throckmorton. When dealing with a historical film, you just can't let facts get in the way of the story ;-)

I liked this movie before I opened this thread. But now I hate it.

Don't you mean the spyglass? The telescope may have been invented when you say, but astronomers before Elizabeth's time were using very elongated spyglasses to glance at the heavens. A smaller device may have been available to sea captains.
