Were all the women like that in the 50s?

Having just watched this, a few random thoughts.

Stunning women in this movie, can't help but feel that people were happier back then too, sure seems that way in the movie.

$5,000 in traveller's checks for a foreign trip - that was a FORTUNE back then, heck it's a reasonable amount even now.

Not a sign of political correctness - people were cast in roles because of their suitability, not to meet some PC quota, and it shows, great movie.

The wife and myself find ourselves watching more and more old movies, they are just so much better than the mindless crap they churn out these days.

I agree.

Times are only simpler when you are looking back. If you were living then, you would find life full of problems just like life today - and you'd be longing for a simpler, older time with hoop dresses instead of bouffant hairdoos.

Or maybe you'd be happy living like Victor Mature, in all-white town with two cops, peeping tom bankers, and a gorgeous patio directly overlooking the local in-use strip mine.

So what's wrong with an all-white town? Plenty of western and mid-west small towns are all white, that doesn't make them bad. It's simply a matter of the demographics.

reply

I was referring to Hollywood all-white which is an accident of reality denial and semi-cloaked racism, not location demographics.

Besides, I've been all over the US, and extremely few towns this size have NO minorities in them, even in the west (definitely not the west) and Midwest. It's demographics like you said - if a place gets large and vibrant with labor needs, populations diversify.

I went to school in small cities in southern California from the late 1950s through the 1960s. There was no segregation there, yet there were no black kids in any of the schools I went to, and very few black people in general. An all-white town is completely plausible in that period, and not because of any kind of racism.

reply

Yeah, all the women were beautiful and elegant back then. If your woman was stupid enough to have an affair, she'd get herself killed and an identical-looking one would sprout up to take her place. No problem. Back in the day, women didn't even mind if you perved over them though their windows as they got changed at night. Nowadays, the bra-burning Feminazis would probably report you to the police, or something equally pathetic.

And all those inconvenient minorities? We didn't allow them to just bust in and make the place look untidy; back then knew their place. If they started entertaining thoughts about being represented in films, they'd be taught a swift lesson in manners.

Clearly here is some progressive education at work. Leftwing America is obessed with racism: not because they care, but as a political tool. It's very sad.

That said though one cannot deny the the segregation issues back in the day. Hollywood did indeed not represent people of colour if at all, but that was because they wanted to make money. People who could afford to go to the movies were by and large white people, so Hollywood had to keep them happy. I believe it's largely a marketing thing. Ah, those refreshing days when it was about making money instead of ideology.

Yes, when I was young I wondered about all the butlers and servants who were black in Hollywood movies. Heck, I just wondered about servants period, because that was something foreign to me. Yes, the US was indeed segregated back then and yes, that is indeed very wrong. But you have to remember that Hollywood was run by white people and I believe that people flock to the known. Meaning that people will surround them with known people or people they have much in common with. It was very difficult to break through as an actor, so I don't think that many black people bothered, because they were just worried about making some money. Also I guess about 15% of the population was black than. This also contributed to less black people working in Hollywood.

About white towns. Yes, when about 80% of the people are white there are bound to be exlusively white towns. This has got nothing to do with racism or whatever, but simply with demographics and preferabillity. Yes, many people like to live with people they have things in common with. It's natural that white people flock together and black people and other people. This is of course only a superfluous commonality, but country- and small town people often are pretty simple folk. By this I mean that many such people are content with what they have and know, content with their way of life and distrustful of strangers. Once you get to know such people they often are very friendly. Well, I can't speak for all people, but that is my experience anyway.

This diversity humbug is nothing more than a political tool. I guess many students are brainwashed with it thinking it is the new holy grail. They just don't seem to understand that when you have all the towns diversified, they are realy all just the same.Isn't that funny?

reply

I've no idea who you're talking to or what you're trying to say (if you even know). Race is used as a political tool? So what? Why wouldn't it be? Everything is used as a political tool, by both Left and Right. But it's always the other side that's 'brainwashed', right? For something to be used as a political tool there needs to be a popular will in favour of it, and promotion of racial integration is a more benign instance of populism than many.

Racial integration is fine when it occurs naturally, not when it is promoted feverishly or indeed used politically.

You have to give the Democrats credit for seeing that they needed minorities to win elections. Minorities are growing in the US and by 2050, whites will be a minority. Republicans have backed themselves into a corner by pandering to scared, spoiled, intolerant white people. They only have themselves to blame because they wanted quick power in the 90's, instead of looking decades down the road and being visionary. If the Republicans don't change soon, they will become an irrelevant memory in a couple decades.

reply

Yeah, that must explain why the Republicans captured the House and Senate. Typical left-wing thinking - minorities are so dumb they will always vote Democrat when they're told. Minorities aren't that stupid, they have eyes to see what a total disaster Obama and his Dumbocrats have been. More and more will vote Republican.

reply

This is typical of right-wing lunatic thought processes. Your talking about NOW when I'm talking about decades from now. NOW was never the point of my post. Did you actually read what I said? NOW doesn't matter.

reply

Well said!

Imagine today, if racial quotas were applied to sports teams: Not enough white folk on that basketball team!

Hah!

In sports now, as in films then, it is about marketing. That is, pleasing the customer.

And there are always those willing to work to break through perceived barriers. Take Sidney Poitier or Harry Belafonte. Both made some fine films, esp. in the noir and action genres (my favorite).

I just saw "Odds Against Tomorrow" the other day, and like to review parts of "In the Heat of the Night" from time to time. Racism is a part of the plot, but not "in your face." (You can keep the preachy-perfect "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.")

I really love these discussion boards. Thanks for your contribution to this one.

Why do so many reviewers have to turn everything into a race problem? If a town in America is 100% white, why does this make it into a racist argument? Demographics makes things happen sometimes. Is the government supposed to select all white towns and force integration to make the race baiters happy here?

reply

There are still towns like that in the USA. Heck the entire state of Vermont is like that! Black people are as rare in Vermont as legal gun owners in Detroit! No wonder a huge majority of Democrats prefer Hillary Clinton to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. It should be illegal for any state to be as white as Vermont!
