his retirement was before to catch A Thief. he had made several films in the early 50s that were not very succesful, and had decided his days as a romantic lead were probably over, and had briefly retired. but he was persuaded to make To catch A Thief, which was successful, and so had another decade of filmmaking before his permanetn retirement.
