I wish I liked Grace Kelly.

I don't know what it is about her... I never feel involved with her characters, it's like she's always so remote. I liked her OK in "High Noon" and that's pretty much it. Cary Grant was basically Cary Grant and wonderful in this film, but Kelly? Does anybody else have this problem?

reply

She is very detached/aloof as an actress, no question. This used to bother me but I have grown to like her style, no one can match it.

reply

No I'm not keen on Grace Kelly, her accent always sounds false to me, like she's trying too hard to be clear.

reply

I haven't seen all of her films but I think she is great in High Society.

reply

those are things I like about her...
the accent, the coolness (alfred hitck used to say something about it;)
Grace Kelly is one of my favourite ever women/actresses :)

I liked her best in Hitchcock's films, especially in To Catch a Thief. I would place Grace Kelly's performances in the three films with Alfred Hitchcock above her Oscar-winning performance in The Country Girl.

Yeah I agree shes not a very good actress. She is basically playing herself as a proper rich girl in most of the films I've seen with her.

reply

I think she's a good enough actress. Just with a limited range.

gee clive, I hope you find a job soon. This long stretch of unemployment is making you bitter.

Maybe I missed out on all the deleted posts, but MM doesn't have an attitude.

I agree. For true glamor, there's Audrey Hepburn in Charade. With Cary Grant, too, for true wit.

reply

I don't necessarily agree about Grace Kelly. But you're spot on with Audrey Hepburn. Charade is one of my favorite movies...

reply

I don't usually like her either. I find her very remote, prim and quite wooden. But in To Catch a Thief she was sexier than usual, which made me thnk she was really the 'cat'. I think Tippi Hedren was the best 'Hitchcock blonde'.

reply

[deleted]

You're right about Tippi being a bit wooden at times, AbeStreet! She wasn't the greatest of actresses, especially in Marnie when she gets upset about her mother and tries to stifle her tears from Sean Connery. But her uptight brand of iciness generally worked very well in The Birds and Marnie. As for GK, I thought she managed to bust out of her usual primness in To Catch a Thief. And she always has nice frocks and handbags. Mind you, so did Kim Novak. Alexander McQueen decicated a handbag to her, based on one she wore in Vertigo.

reply

Tippi Hedren was great in The Birds, possibly because the part didn't require that much acting. I didn't think she did as well in Marnie. The movie was great, I just didn't find her acting to be very convincing.

reply

Well, in this movie she keeps running Grant's character over until the (very!) end; she never really interacts with him, it's always her stating her position and him taking it or leaving it (mostly taking it ). And she does it with everybody and everything, like when she decides that he stole her mother's jewelry even though it was such a counterintuitive conclusion; but who cared, it was her conclusion and it wouldn't go away unless something extraordinary happened. I was vainly hoping that Cary would go Clark Gable on her at some point.
Sorry for the rant, I just hated her 50's version of "Beverly Hills, 90210" looks and attitude with a passion. Actually it was an unexpectedly disagreeable character even for Ms. Kelly, usually I have no problem ignoring or (more likely) tolerating her characters.

If it hadn't been for her (and for the at times out of focus plot), I'd have given this movie a 9 instead of an 8.

Yes I'm also a "think she's gorgeous but doesn't do anything for me as an actress" kind of guy. Her modeling background and perfect figure (OMG) she and her directors used quite well but that's as far as I'll go for her talent and personality. She was definitely one of the most beautiful women ever- and naturally beautiful with little or no makeup. Compare her to Elizabeth Taylor who caked on the makeup, the eye shadow and eyeliner and seemed a bit too soft and unathletic- I have never understood why she was considered the world's most beautiful woman at one time...

Now, to me, she played *perfectly* in this movie as the character whose own mother would describe by saying "I should never have sent her to finishing school. I think they finished her there."

reply

She was playing a person somewhat close to herself in some ways I've read so maybe not a big acting stretch.

reply

I never quite got the Elizabeth Taylor obsession either....I thought she was beautiful but definitely not as breathtakingly gorgeous as everybody seemed to have thought she was...even after she had gained [more] weight in her later 30s, people were still raving about her... And yes, goodness, the layers of makeup. All those perfume endorsements. The over-the-top jewelry. There was just this all too apparent veneer of artifice about Taylor that I just couldn't bring myself to subscribe to. (Granted, artifice is part of being an actor but you know what I mean....)

She may not have range. Grace is good at the kind of characters she plays, and is not boring to me. I like how she brings class and grace to her roles. She is naturally stunning women. No one is liked by everybody. Everything is so subjective. She is one of my favorite classic ladies.

Well put. She doesn't pretend to be Goldie Hawn. She plays a princess that any prince would want, which may be why she became one.

reply

Before I heard she was princess. I always thought she could have been one.

reply

Yep -- that was just her.

Not everyone can be Streep. Jack is Jack, The Duke is The Duke and Grace is Grace.

@ jstang411

I know right. To me some people can do one thing. They do it so good to where people like to escape or connect with it. At least Grace brings class, grace and elegance, instead of trash to her roles. Thats why Hitchcock liked her and used her for 3 movies. He wanted to use her for more, but she was princess, and could not do them. Hitchcock and Grace is perfect entertainment. I know not everybody is going to like her. There are people who thinks she talentless. Her fans appreciate(like us) what she did. No one will be able to replace her. To us there is one Grace Kelly. She is one of the many great legends.

I believe she is also a testament that pure charisma (in her case incorporating class and beauty) can make you a movie star.

Is Grace Kelly her real name? If not, someone chose "grace" for her.

reply

Yes I agree about charisma. I don't know if it's her birth name or not, but I have always though Grace is so perfect for her.

reply

Our conversation got me to look it up....Grace is her real name. Guess her parents knew what she would turn out to be like.

reply

Thanks for looking it up. They gave her perfect name. It suits her perfectly.
