I'm watching this movie right now on TCM ( Turner Classic Movies ) for the very first time too . Quite a funny movie and memorable cast here as well . I just happen to notice ( IMPO ) that Celeste Holm in this movie bares a striking resemblance to actress Virginia Madsen . Also Debbie Reynolds was only 23 years old when she did this film too . Whoa ! Does time march on . Thanks ksf-2 for your subject post .

reply

Ha, you're right! Holm DID have a resemblance to Virginia Madsen, especially in profile and three-quarter profile. Funny, she reminded me of someone but couldn't quite figure out who. Now I know. :)

So agree BelleDameSansMerci . I had that very same reaction you did when I first watched this film and even looked her up to see if by chance she was related to actress Virginia Madsen but didn't find anything . I guess it's a case of one actress just happening to look a lot like another here . I still think it's amazing how many actresses ( and actors ) back in day looked like some of the ones of this age now too - totally uncanny .

Bette Davis would have never let Celeste outshine her in Eve. They didn't get along during the shoot and Margo's character both on screen and in real life was very insecure about her looks. The part of Karen Richards was not meant to be glamorous like Margo Channing was. Now, Gentleman's Agreement was made three years before Eve and she did look more glamorous in it.

Yet in this movie and Gentleman's Agreement she plays the has-been, almost old maid who is desperate to hook a guy, any guy. because she has such limited options.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

She has the best line in the movie. Men who want a girl shouldn't marry her. Once a girl is married she becomes a wife (or something like that).

She was limited to playing the second fiddle, the best friend, the girl who never got the best looking guy. Typecast.

There no reason for Celeste Holm to have outshined Bette Davis in All About Eve. It was Davis' movie all the way. Just rewatched it for the nth time, and I never tire of watching Bette Davis. She was fantastic. It was a different time, different style of acting, and BD was the queen.
