Was that a real horse that fell into the freezing river near the start of the movie?

I believe it was actually Shelley Winters.

I understand most of those early scenes were shot on the backlot with fake snow. So the water wasn't really freezing and the horse was probsbly fine.

I'm glad to hear that! I find it difficult to enjoy a movie that animals or people have been hurt or killed in.
