Beautiful theme song

Anyone know the name of the theme they kept playing throughout the movie?

Like you said, it's simply the film's theme song. I don't think it has a special title (or if it has, it's probably "Summertime" or "Summer Madness" or whatever).

BTW, do you know that for years after the film was made the little orchestra in front of the "Florian" played this theme every time they spotted David Lean?
Supposedly, it was their way of saying "thanks" because he had brought Venice to the world's attention (and masses of American tourists to Venice) again.

I am sure he soon learned to avoid the Piazza San Marco. ;)

I play the piano, and if I remember the title, the name of this piece is "Summertime in Venice." It was written for this film, and I too think it's a beautifully captivating Neapolitan melody. You can still get the sheet music, I believe, if you play an instrument.

Hi I just watched the film and thought I recognised the tune. It sounds strikingly similar to 'As Long As He Needs Me' which later appeared in the musical / film, 'Oliver' as sung by the character Nancy.
Perhaps it's just very similar, or maybe a translation of this Italian? / Summertime song?
